What is Compounding?
Drug compounding is often regarded as the process of combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. Compounding includes the combining of two or more drugs.
Why Compounded Medications?
Why do people need compounded medications? “The need arises because people often have allergies, cannot swallow dry tablets or large capsules, or may need medication in a liquid, topical, or transdermal dosage form.” Roger Rose, RPh, Director of Pharmacy at Wickenburg Hospital (WCH) Pharmacist explains further, “Doctors and other healthcare providers may prescribe compounded medications because manufactured medications are not available in the best dose for a particular patient. You no longer need to split tablets to get closer to the right dose or try to coerce someone you care for to take a medication that tastes awful. We can flavor medications for people and their pets! Perhaps you like watermelon or coffee, and your cat or dog might want tuna or beef. Ask our knowledgeable compounding pharmacist about customized options to solve your medication problems.”
The Value of Compounded Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (cBHT)
Men and women entering “middle age” may begin to notice bodily changes. People may gain a few pounds, not sleep as well or experience mood changes due to declining hormone levels, and symptoms may intensify with increasing age. For many reasons, including lack of response to traditional therapy, customized hormone therapy has become the choice for many. Compounding permits the dose, dosage form, and route of administration to be customized and titrated to obtain the desired clinical effect in each individual patient while minimizing potential side effects by using lower doses. This is why so many patients prefer cBHT as compared to manufactured products which are available only in limited dosage forms and strengths. Millions of women now rely on customized therapy for menopausal issues, fertility challenges, and other hormonal imbalances, and men concerned about loss of strength and vitality benefit from customized therapy as well.
