Treatment for Shingles

Treatment for Shingles 21March

As many as 1 million adults in the U.S. suffer from postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a chronic complication of herpes zoster infection. Commonly referred to as shingles, herpes zoster results from the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus usually contracted during childhood in the form of chickenpox. A patient-specific approach using compounded medications relieved PHN pain that had not responded to commercially available medications. The use of topical and intranasal analgesics allowed for higher concentrations of medication to be achieved locally at the site of pain while reducing the likelihood of side effects associated with systemic (oral or injectable) medications. No adverse effects were noted for either topical or intranasal drug therapy. Our compounding pharmacist can work together with patients and their physicians to customize medications that meet specific needs.  By Roger Rose, RPh, Director of Pharmacy Services
